Trump-Queen Elizabeth II Meeting Update: Downing Street To Reject Petition With Over 1 Million Signatures?

Image
Downing Street has declared that it will not entertain calls by the public to cancel U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed state visit to the U.K. despite a petition urging the government to do so having reached over a million signatures since Saturday. BBC citing anonymous sources said that the decision was made considering that rejection of Trump's proposed state visit to the U.K., which was announced last week during U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May's trip to the U.S., would be a "populist gesture," apart from the fact that the invitation has already been accepted. "The government's position is that an invitation has been extended to the President and it has been accepted," Downing Street, the official residence of the prime minister, told CNBC. The petition stated that Trump’s entry into the United Kingdom would cause embarrassment to “Her Majesty the Queen." "Donald Trump's well documented misogyny and vulgarity d...

Bitcoin: Change in China (And What It Means For Bitcoin)

Image
Noelle Acheson is a 10-year veteran of company analysis, corporate finance and fund management, and is a member of CoinDesk's product team. The following article originally appeared in CoinDesk Weekly, a custom-curated newsletter delivered every Sunday, exclusively to our subscribers. The financial world saw history made last week when, for the first time ever, a Chinese head of state took the podium at the World Economic Forum's famed Davos conference in Switzerland. Issued on 17th January, Xi Jinping's speech has since been interpreted as a response to rising protectionism – and an attempt to consolidate China’s position on the world stage. But, it's worth examining in another light. It is also likely to be indicative of the path Chinese authorities will take regarding the country's bitcoin exchanges. A recap While we've been focusing on the central bank's scrutiny (and its potential impact on bitcoin's network and price), this...

The Words Of Chief Femi Fani-Kayode--A Fearless Man of God Off The Pulpit!

Read The Words Of Chief Femi Fani-Kayode--A Fearless Man of God Off The Pulpit! ======================= Vanguard News of January 22, 2017 ======================= The Fulani Republic of Nigeria (2): Clearly something has gone horribly wrong and this reinforces my belief that the amalglamation of the northern and southern regions of Nigeria in 1914 was not just a mistake but a demonically-inspired, craftily-contrived and premeditated satanic conspiracy by the British to destroy the greatness and enormous human potentials of the people of the South and the Middle Belt of Nigeria. I do not believe in and neither do I respect a man-made, artificial, hybrid, mongrel-state like Nigeria which has forcefully lumped my people together with those that are inherently fascistic and racist, that are culturally and historically inferior, that are intellectually defective and that are nothing more than genocidal maniacs, ethnic vagabonds, wandering herdsmen, cow-loving jihadists and islamic funda...

Nigeria: Why 19 governors convened talks with Northern Emirs

Image
Gov Shettima's address to Chairmen of councils of Northern traditional rulers  - Let me place it on record that the decision to invite Your Royal Highnesses and other stakeholders to this crucial meeting was the collective decision of all the 19 Governors under our forum and was borne out of the recognition of the fundamental - if not indispensable - position and role the traditional institution occupy in the grand scheme of things in Nigeria, particularly in the Northern region. For us in Northern Nigeria, our royal fathers are, for the most part, custodians of both our cultural and religious values, highly revered and hold their traditional offices in virtual perpetuity. Indeed, quite a few instances abound in all parts of our region, like their Highnesses the Emir of Lafia Dr. Isa Mustapha Agwai, the Emir of Zauzau Dr. Shehu Idris, and the Aku-Uka of Wukari Dr. Shekarau Angyu Masa Ibi Kuvyon ll, where our traditional rulers ascended their thrones long b...

'Yes we did': Barack Obama lifts America one last time in emotional farewell

Image
“Yes we can,” he said one last time. “Yes we did.” And the crowd roared. Barack Obama – the son of a Kenyan goat herder and self-described “skinny kid with a funny name” who grew up to become America’s first black president – had come to say goodbye. But while for most of the past eight years it had seemed this night would be one of joy and nostalgia, now it came with a sober note, laden with omens and warnings about a democracy under siege. Obama had hoped to be talking about passing on the baton to fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton. Instead Donald Trump’s stunning victory implied an existential threat and called for him to paint on a bigger canvas. In a “state of our democracy” speech he deftly concentrated his fire not on the president-elect but on the malaise that produce him. In 4,300 words he only mentioned Trump by name once – but delivered much by way of repudiation. Obama dismissed talk of post-racial America, in vogue after his own ascent in 2008, as unrea...

World Cup expansion: How will it work and what does it mean for Ireland?

Image
On Tuesday morning the Fifa Council met in Zurcih and voted unanimously to expand the World Cup from 32 teams to 48 teams from 2026 onwards. While there is no doubt that the club game now dominates the footballing landscape in every way, the four-yearly meeting of nations from all around the globe is still a huge deal, particularly for Fifa and their cash reserves. New president Gianni Infantino used the expansion as one of his key marketing tools during his campaign for election and he has now been vindicated. While full details won’t emerge for some time yet, here is everything you need to know about how the biggest sporting event in the world will play out from 2026. First off, how will the format change? The World Cup is currently played between 32 countries with eight groups of four. The top two in each group then advance to the last 16 before the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. Y...
