With Tillerson, Trump keeps betting big on business leaders.

Image
WASHINGTON (AP) — In selecting Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson as his secretary of state, President-elect Donald Trump is making the same bet he asked voters to make on him: that a track record of business accomplishment will translate into success in government. Indeed, Trump, the first billionaire businessman to win the White House, is broadly testing that proposition across his administration. He's tapped fast food executive Andy Puzder to lead the Labor Department, billionaire investor Wilbur Ross for Commerce, financier Steven Mnuchin as Treasury secretary and Goldman Sachs President Gary Cohn as his top economic adviser. But he's taking perhaps his biggest chance on Tillerson, pulling an executive from the rough-and-tumble world of oil production into the delicate arena of international diplomacy. If confirmed by the Senate — and his deep ties to Russia make that no sure thing — Tillerson will be at the center of discussions over the Syrian civil war, ...

Ngige has asked Governor Obiano to get his handover notes ready ahead of Anambra guber poll He saves only Obiano's defection to APC will save him  Obiano's media aide says Ngige is daydreaming Senator Chris Ngige, the minister of labour and employment, on Monday, December 12, advised Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state to start writing his handover notes ahead of the governorship election in the state. Speaking at a press conference in Awka, the Anambra state capital, the APC would contest the governorship election in the state fully and effectively and unless Obiano joins the ruling party, he doesn’t stand a chance of retaining his seat. The minister said: “We are going to contest that election fully, effectively, with all the resources at our disposal. And I can tell you without any fear of contradiction that Anambra will be an APC state.” Ngige, who said he would not contest the 2017 governorship election of the state because of his national ...

Wenger seeking divine intervention to overcome Bayern

Image
Dec 13 (Reuters) - Arsene Wenger feels guilty about Arsenal's Champions League failures and the Frenchmen is hoping a quote from the bible can act as inspiration when they face Bayern Munich in the round of 16. Arsenal will aim to reach the quarter-finals for a first time in seven seasons when they face Bayern in February and March, having lost twice to the Germans and Barcelona, and once each to AC Milan and Monaco in their last six campaigns. "We are all here to change history and to make history, so we have to change what happened before and make it better," the Arsenal manager told British media. "Look, the last six years we have not come past the last 16. They said that God made the world in seven days and this is the seventh day for us! So we have to get a special day." Arsenal hoped to avoid a European heavyweight after topping their group but were pitted against Bayern for the fourth time in five seasons when the draw was made ...

Parenting

Image
A father’s influence goes to the fourth generation after him. Whitney Houston’s parents Emily (Cissy) and John Houston divorced when she was at kindergarten. Together with lover, Bobby Brown, Whitney smoked crack in the presence of their 5 year old daughter, Bobbi Kristina. At 22, Bobbi died of drug abuse…her mother Whitney died at 48 on similar grounds. Great careers and more importantly, great lives lost due to weak fatherhood. 💡While there is little you can do about your ancestors, there is something that you can do about your descendants. One thing that prevents a man from being a good father is that he hasn’t completed being a boy. To be in your children’s’ memory tomorrow, you have to be in their lives’ today. Having children doesn’t make you a father. Raising them does. 💡There are many of us who were raised up in unstable families but we don’t have to pass it on to our children. We don’t have to fight in the presence of our children. We can choose to shield their emotio...

GROWING INTO MATURITY (6)AVOID THE TRAP OF RELIGION

Image
Welcome to the Hour of Good News! GROWING INTO MATURITY (6) AVOID THE TRAP OF RELIGION "What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people's faces. You won't go in yourselves, and you don't let others enter either. "What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you cross land and sea to make one convert, and then you turn that person into twice the child of hell you yourselves are!" (Matt 23:13-15) NLT Religion is a trap for most people. It shuts the door of the kingdom in people’s face. It has the form of godliness but denying the power thereof. Millions of people are practicing religion and they taught they are serving the living God. Religious people don’t really have a deep relationship with God. They relate with God in their own way- they serve Him the way they want to, not the way He want them to serve Him. Jude descr...

GROWING INTO MATURITY (5)THE PLACE OF RIGTH TEACHINGS

Image
Welcome to the Hour of Good News! GROWING INTO MATURITY (5) THE PLACE OF RIGTH TEACHINGS “Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom.” (Matt 9:35) NLT The lack of right teaching is the primary reason we’ve failed to grow. Certainly we can study ourselves and grow to some extent. But God also put teachers in the Church to help us grow, to feed us upon God’s word. Most of what is taught and preached in the church today is things of minor importance rather than the real substance. We are majoring on the minor. Teachings on how to succeed in life, mental development and motivational speaking and politics are good but they are not the major food required for spiritual growth. Some of these things can as well be thought outside of church. There are many sales, and marketing people that can motivate us to taking actions that can make us succeed as individuals. Don’t misunderstand me,...

FG stops 571,000 tonnes of rice from entering Nigeria

Image
The Federal Government on Monday announced that 571,000 tonnes of foreign rice warehoused in neighbouring countries were being targeted for the Nigerian market for the Christmas and New Year season, but vowed to stop their entry. It also stated that Nigeria recently took delivery of 110 rice mills in its bid to enhance local production so as to commence the exportation of white rice from next year. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, who disclosed these in Abuja, stated that some of Nigeria’s neighbours, particularly the Republic of Benin, were not moving goods within the region as required by relevant treaties. He, however, stated that the Federal Government would henceforth check all illegal movements of food and non-food items into Nigeria from the neighbouring countries. Ogbeh said, “What they do is that they import goods, station themselves at our borders and then smuggle them into Nigeria. For instance, the Republic of Benin d...

Open letter to President Buhari - Moremi Ojudu

Image
Editor’s note: President Muhammadu Buhari was elected on the platform of change but hid administration has failed to live up to its expectation. In this open letter by Moremi Ojudu, she called on President Buhari to fulfil campaign promises and address the financial issue affecting the country. Dear President Muhammadu Buhari, I write this letter in response to the growing anxieties and pains stalking the land, especially the unintended fire storm which my comments elicited on the social blogosphere some few days back. Candidly, I only wanted to express my frustrations at the shape and turn of things in the country and take you to task on previously given assurances that you feel the pains which Nigerians are grappling with. While thanking you most profusely for feeling our pains, we would be better off if there were immediate remedial steps which could bail us from further hardships. The pains for want of a better word are unimaginable and any hint of its continuing will not aug...

How I made Obasanjo President in 1999 – Tony Anenih

Image
Former Peoples Democratic Party, Board of Trustees, BoT, Tony Anenih has disclosed how former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, emerged as the party’s candidate in 1999. This was contained in his recently released book, “My Life and Nigerian Politics.” According to Anenih, the former President told him, “you should take me to Aso Rock but how you do it is not my business”. He said, “We got the first notice (as PDM leaders) through Lt General Aliu Mohammed, later national security adviser, that General Olusegun Obasanjo was interested in the PDP presidential candidacy and would like PDM’s support,” he wrote. “Seven PDM leaders met at Bolingo Hotel that morning and agreed to support Obasanjo mainly because of his stature, inspiring role in Nigerian politics, his voluntarily handing over to civilians (Shagari in 1979) and also because of his good relationship with Shehu Musa Yar’ Adua. “When his campaign outfit needed some strengthening and strategy, he called ...

Love‚ don't hurt your woman - and speak out if you see abuse in your neighbourhood: Zuma

Image
President Jacob Zuma on Friday took up the cause against abuse‚ pledging that his government is determined to use all resources at its disposal‚ to make the country safer for women and children. "What is of serious concern is that most women are attacked by men they know and in most cases men they are intimate with - their husbands or partners‚" Zuma said. "We are losing more and more women at the hands of their violent intimate partners." The president encouraged women to speak out‚ and not to accept abuse. "The danger about living in an unattended violent relationship is that it intensifies over time until it leads to death. "Violence against women has been declared a priority crime by government. Women must not be scared to report the perpetrators to the police." Zuma was speaking at the launch of the National Dialogues on Violence Against Women and Children‚ and the Commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of...

Dear men, this too is violence against women. by sneha bengani

Image
International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed across the world on November 25 every year. The day holds great significance, especially in India, where women face gender violence almost every day in various forms — from child marriage, dowry killings human trafficking to rape and domestic violence — largely due to deep-rooted patriarchal mindsets and sexist attitudes that view them as second-rate citizens. According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), about 35,000 rape cases were reported across India in 2015. In 95.5% of these cases, the victims knew their alleged rapists. Another 4,500 cases were filed last year, reporting attempted rape. These numbers show the prevalence of just one of the many crimes that Indian women suffer in their daily lives. Indians have become so inured to heinous crimes like rape — we easily digest rape stories with our breakfast — that we have turned blind to the other not-so-physically-violent crimes...

Obasanjo attacks Buhari over state of the nation

Latching on the state of the nation, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Wednesday, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to rise to the challenges posed by the current recession in Nigeria, noting that orders, wishful thinking and blame game would not solve the hapless state of affairs in the country. Obama calls for unity in Thanksgiving message.

Image
Washington (CNN) President Barack Obama called for unity in his final Thanksgiving address Thursday, just weeks after what he called the "sometimes divisive campaign" came to a close. "As a country, we've just emerged from a noisy, passionate, and sometimes divisive campaign season," Obama said in his weekly address. "After all, elections are often where we emphasize what sets us apart. We face off in a contest of 'us' versus 'them.' We focus on the candidate we support instead of some of the ideals we share ... But a few short weeks later, Thanksgiving reminds us that no matter our differences, we are still one people, part of something bigger than ourselves." For his part, President-elect Donald Trump, in his holiday message released yesterday, called for national unity as well and he vowed to bring the country together in common purpose. But the wounds from the election are still fresh and liberal leade...

Microsoft Edge Is Safer Than Google Chrome And Mozilla Firefox, New Windows 10 Notification Claims

Image
To say that Microsoft has heavily promoted Windows 10 would be a gross understatement. The company went above and beyond to push its latest operating system and harassed users with constant notifications, pop-ups, alerts and other nagware. Not too long ago, Microsoft started pushing intrusive notifications alerting users that Google Chrome drained their device's battery life faster than the Microsoft Edge browser. In fact, Microsoft said that Edge was the best browser for battery life, but it didn't stop there. Windows Tips Earlier this month, Microsoft started a blatant Windows 10 promotion that urged Google Chrome users to switch to Microsoft Edge. Microsoft served these suggestions as Windows Tips notifications, but instead of getting tips on how to navigate the OS or use various features, Chrome users got Edge ads that Microsoft denied were ads. Microsoft is now at it again, introducing a new Windows tip that now informs Chrome and Firefox users that...

Jonathan, a worthy symbol of democracy

Image
Erstwhile Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, has described former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as a great leader, who has contributed in no small measure to the advancement and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large. Moro, who was a member of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) under the immediate past administration of Jonathan, made the statement in a goodwill message to the former President as he clocked 59 on Sunday. According to the Benue State-born grassroots politician, Jonathan recorded tremendous achievements as President through his transformation agenda, whose footprint was seen in all sectors of the economy before he left office in 2015. He stated that the ex-President laid a solid foundation upon which the country’s electoral system was rebuilt and restructured, a feat which according to him, paved way for the conduct of free and fair elections in Nigeria.  The ex-Minister further noted that the current c...

Barack Obama Exudes Calm About Donald Trump As Democrats Fret

Image
Lima, Peru:  On the surface, President Barack Obama was cool-headed, cerebral and confident, doling out parting reassurances to world leaders on his final global jaunt. Behind the scenes, his aides and Democrats back at home were a deflated and weary bunch, grimly ending Obama's tenure in a way they never imagined. The jarring gap between Obama's public face and the prevailing Democratic sentiment about Donald Trump's election was an unexpected element to Obama's final presidential trip, which included visits to Greece, Germany and Peru. Time after time, Obama opted for optimism over any sense of foreboding, and diplomatic dodges over criticism. The man whose legacy risks being devastated by Trump's election appeared to be the one Democrat who wouldn't publicly fret about its impact. As Obama hopped from capital to capital, news of the emerging Trump administration followed him, dominating news conferences and private...

Nigeria: We've Hired 200,000 Graduates - Govt

Image
By Victor Ahiuma-Young, Levinus Nwabughiogu and Dayo Adesulu President Muhammadu Buhari's 500,000 job intervention programme for unemployed graduates has finally kicked off, with successful applicants commencing work on December 1, 2016. The programme is in line with the 2015 election campaign promises of ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to provide jobs for teeming unemployed youths in the country. The fulfilment is, however, coming precisely one year and seven months after the administration came on stream. The project has had several hiccups, which elicited doubts in many Nigerians about its practicability. This persisted until the Office of the Vice President where the project is domiciled, announced that it was factored into the 2016 national budget signed into law by President Buhari on May 6, 2016. To this end, a statement from the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's office yesterday stated that "all is now set for the deployment of 200,000...
