Image
Deputy Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Vuong Dinh Hue The Socialist Republic of Vietnam yesterday begged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to appeal to the Federal Government to allow its country import rice to Nigeria at discounted rates. The Deputy Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Vuong Dinh Hue, made the appeal in Abuja when he led a five-man delegation to meet the Adams Oshiomshole-led National Working Committee. He said the delegation would also meet Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to present similar demands. Reacting, Oshiomhole said Nigeria would not accept such demand from Vietnam, advising the country to rather secure land and invest in rice production in Nigeria. He said Nigeria would no longer become a dumping ground for unwanted chemicals and spoilt products among others, stressing that Nigeria’s borders would remain closed until neighbouring countries learn to respect the rule of fair trade.

The Colonization of the Continent by European Powers

The Berlin Conference to Divide Africa Adalbert von Rößler (†1922)/Wikimedia Commons/Public Domain by Matt Rosenberg The Berlin Conference was described by Harm J. de Bli in "Geography: Realms, Regions, and Concepts:" "The Berlin Conference was Africa's undoing in more ways than one. The colonial powers superimposed their domains on the African continent. By the time independence returned to Africa in 1950, the realm had acquired a legacy of political fragmentation that could neither be eliminated nor made to operate satisfactorily." Purpose of the Berlin Conference In 1884, at the request of Portugal, German chancellor  Otto von Bismark  called together the major western powers of the world to negotiate questions and end confusion over the control of Africa. Bismark appreciated the opportunity to expand Germany's sphere of influence over Africa and hoped to force Germany's rivals to struggle with one another for territory. At the time of the conference,...

An official count of the missing in Dapchi hasn’t been released, although the governor’s office said it was working to compile one. ASSIGNMENT FOR MR PRESIDENT. By IKB

Image
ASSIGNMENT FOR MR PRESIDENT : Obviously 2019 is approaching rapidly and ofcourse Buhari is interested to continue in office till 2023. Sounding note of advice, if the present situation of things in Nigeria continues   definitely you are going no where because the masses are crying. Let's face the facts and pick it one by one. PETROLEUM PRODUCTS: Why is it that refineries in Nigeria will not  function, as an ex soldier you must use every available means to protect and ensure the safety of the refineries for production  to discourage importation of petroleum products instead of waiting for Dangote in 2021, enough local consumption of the product will bring down the price per litre which is the hope for the poor and also save our foreign exchange reserve. FOREIGN EXCHANGE RATE: Now that you have been able to work hard and bring up the foreign reserve as in the news last night crossing $40b which is a tremendous achievement, (thanks for that) why is it that the excha...

Nigeria: Uproar As Nigerians Demand Release of Notorious Kidnapper, Evans

Image
By Chiemelie Ezeobi There was uproar on the social media sphere after some Nigerians launched a campaign to clamour for the release of notorious kidnap kingpin, Chukwudubem Onwuamadike, alias Evans. Creating a hashtag #FreeEvans, the movement has since gathered momentum as many people are calling on the police to release the suspect they arrested on Saturday, June 10, 2017. Championed by Evans' wife, Uche, the campaign for his release was based on the premise that if he is released, he will help the police in cracking other high profile cases. According to their reasoning, Evans should not be jailed while some corrupt politicians who have been accused of embezzling funds are still walking around free. As at Saturday, the hashtag had garnered over 51,000 tweets and retweets, while the figure skyrocketed to about 70,000 Tuesday and however shocking it might be, has since clinched the third position on the trends list in Nigeria. From the absurd tweets t...

British government to lay out Brexit strategy

Image
London (AFP) - Prime Minister Theresa May's government was to publish its Brexit strategy Thursday after winning a first parliamentary vote on a bill that would empower her to start pulling Britain out of the EU. The so-called "white paper" will outline Britain's negotiating aims as May prepares to officially begin the process of divorce from the European Union following last year's historic referendum vote. In an emotional parliamentary session, MPs on Wednesday approved the first stage of a bill for triggering Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty, which would fire the starting gun on two years of exit negotiations. Many pro-EU MPs voiced their anguish at voting against their own deeply-held beliefs to pass the bill, which is expected to receive final approval by the House of Lords next month. One MP was heard shouting "Suicide!" as the result of the vote was announced in the chamber. Pro-Brexit newspapers lauded the result...

Trump fires Justice Dep't head over clash on refugee ban

Image
WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump's abrupt, late-night firing of the acting U.S. attorney general sends a clear message to his future Cabinet about his tolerance for public dissent. The president will soon have in place like-minded political appointees, not inherited officials like Sally Yates who refused to allow the Justice Department to defend his immigration orders in court. And they will be less inclined to publicly disagree with him. But his haste in firing an Obama administration holdover, his spokesman's admonishment that career employees should "either get with the program or go" and Trump's comments about issues he wants federal prosecutors to investigate all illustrate how he moves aggressively to ensure his directives are carried out, even at agencies like the Justice Department that cherish their independence. Over the decades, there has "been respect for the independence of the Justice Department as a law enforcement...
