It is in the Little Things.
Often when we imagine or romanticize about the future, we think of big happenstances. A big break, a massive financial windfall, a mouthwatering surprise package and a big slice of luck. However, big things often come in the small details or little changes that serve as the conduit for the bigger things. Whether it is getting a well-paying job, travelling abroad, sealing a business deal, or even making lifestyle changes, it is all in the little and often, insignificant things.
Things like saying yes and no, believing in your inner voice, meditating longer, talking less, and doing more, educating your mind and as simple as a word of prayer when troubled. This may translate as sending that email, walking away from toxicity, changing your inner circle, searching Google before asking some general questions and taking a stand against procrastination.
This reminds of the conversation I had with a dear friend yesterday. He is at the verge of completing his PhD in Alberta, Canada and delightfully, he announced to me that he had just secured a Postdoctoral position at the prestigious Yale University. In my curiosity, I enquired how he was able to manage to accomplish such as outstanding feat owing to his schedules that starved him of needed time. His next words struck a chord deep inside. He said, ‘it was cumulative of the little things he did every day.’ From targeted emails to Professors at Yale to broadening the latitude of his research network and goal. He achieved success by virtue of the little everyday efforts that laid the groundwork for the phenomenal.
Without a doubt, it is negligible things we do everyday that paves the way for our future experience. Minuscule things like the creative expenditure of time, how we speak, process, and manage emotions, and the substance we feed our soul and grey matter.
In the last two months, I have experienced unprecedented changes in my personal life by making little changes. By becoming more resilient, I was able to meet a very crucial deadline. By improving my determination, I was able to get a short term contract job even when the application had closed. Also, by saying more words of affirmation, I have seen personal changes in my life that have ushered the transcendental.
Life is a microcosm of the macrocosm. It rewards us by our diligently we stick to improving the little things around us before we enjoy the bigger packages from what is to come.
Like Luke said, ‘if you are steadfast in little things, you would be steadfast in large things.’
Do not be afraid to make that change or seek a better start, remember, it is all in the little things.
